Dr. Joel Gelman’s first surgical volunteer international trip was to Hue, Vietnam in 2013 in partnership with IVUMed. Dr. Gelman quickly realized the need for sub-specialty expertise in male reconstructive urology. On a subsequent trip to Saigon, he assumed a mentorship role with a local Saigon Urologist, Dr. Hung Do at Binh Dan Hospital. With Dr. Gelman’s mentorship, proper equipment, imaging capabilities, and two 4-month mini-fellowship observership at UCI, along with annual 2-week workshops in Saigon to include approximately 15 urethroplasties every trip, the success rates of surgeries increased to up to 98%. Dr. Gelman is now expanding these types of workshops to include participants of other countries including Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
