On January 5, 2023, UCI Urology was proud to host the very first UC Urology debate series. This series was designed to create collegial discussion amongst the UCs on treatment selection. Two scenarios on considerations for management of LUTS in the sexually active male patient were debated among leading BPH experts, as they discussed their
treatment arguments for each scenario.
The first scenario: A 62-year-old man presents with bothersome LUTS/BPH on oral therapy and a TRUS demonstrating 60cc prostate and no significant median lobe on cystoscopy. He is sexually active and is adamant about preserving ejaculatory function. Among the treatment arguments were iTind – Dr. Victor Nitti (UCLA), UroLift – Dr. Zhina Sadeghi (UCI), Rezum – Dr. Darshan Patel (UC San Diego) and PAE – Dr. Ryan Kohlbrenner (UCSF).
The second scenario: A 70-year-old man presents with bothersome LUTS/BPH and TRUS demonstrating 100cc prostate size. He is sexually active. Among the treatment arguments were TURP – Dr. Katsuto Shinohara (UCSF), PVP – Dr. Gamal Ghoniem (UCI), HoLEP – Dr. Akhil Das (UCI), Aquablation – Dr. Noah Canvasser (UC Davis), and Robotic Simple
Prostatectomy – Dr. Nick Donin (UCLA).
